The Postojna Cave System for Adrenaline Lovers

Were you tempted to find out what was hiding in the passages you passed on foot or on the train during your visit to the Postojna Cave?

The Postojna Cave System for Adrenaline Lovers

Get to know the hidden beauty of the Postojna Cave: see the cave pearls of the Small Caves, »pagodas« of the Coloured Passage, descend into the kingdom of the dead or experience the intertwined network of the Postojna Cave System.

Adventure tours have been designed for anyone who would like to visit those parts of the caves that are not open for regular tours, experience more demanding passages, cross over water obstacles and relive the exploration of caves. Adventure tours are done in small groups, guided by experienced guides and divided in three difficulty levels.

The Postojna Cave and the Small Caves

The Small Caves, which are 500 metres in length, are a passage that connects the Old Cave with the Concert Hall. During the time when tours of the Postojna Cave were still done on foot, the Small Caves were part of regular tours.

The walls of the Small Caves are richly calcified, the most outstanding formation of all being the Gothic Column. There are cave pearls - small flowstone balls that reach about the size of marbles - lying around the cave floor.

Since the Small Caves have for the past few decades not been part of regular cave tours, an interesting development of new formations can be witnesses today: the cave pearls. They are formed where water drips on the cave floor and calcite is deposited around small particles, such as sand granules. The droplets move the granules and spin them around, so the calcite is deposited around the core in equal measures.

A tour of the Postojna Cave and the Small Caves takes 2 hours and a half. The route taken is not a difficult one and no additional caving equipment is required. The tours are guided and consist of a small number of people (3–10 or 11–20 people).

The Coloured Passage and the Lower Tartar

The Coloured Passage is one of the largest and most beautiful side passages of the Postojna Cave. The passage is richly calcified and the flowstone features many different colours, which is the origin of the passage's name.

The Upper Tartar, which is entered through the Concert Hall, used to lead all the way to the Otok Cave. The wide passage continues into the narrower Lower Tartar, which is frequently flooded and connects the subterranean Pivka River with the central sections of the Postojna Cave. The Lower Tartar, which has no flowstone formations, leads to a subterranean lake. You might get lucky and see the proteus in its natural habitat.

Tours of the Coloured Passage and the Lower Tartar take three to four hours. The route taken is of medium difficulty level and is not suitable for children younger than 15 years of age. Guided tours are organized for groups of 3 to 10 people.

Through the Postojna Cave into the Black Cave and the Pivka Cave

In the period between the First and the Second World Wars, when the territory of Postojna was part of Italy, three caves within the Postojna Cave System were connected by means of artificial passages: the Postojna, Black and Pivka Caves. The construction of artificial passages was a military project and according to the plan, which was eventually not carried out, the tunnel was supposed to continue from the Pivka Cave into the Planina Cave, whose exit was located exactly on the Italian-Yugoslav border.

The artificial passage makes it possible to get from one cave into the other easily, which gives visitors an opportunity to get to know the grandeur of the Postojna Cave System.

A walk around all three caves takes 2 to 3 hours along an easy way. The tours are guided and consist of a small number of people (3–10 or 11–30 people).
